Last Time Out - Lappin Sets Single-Season Goal Record as Dragons Advance
A pair of second half goals from Delaney Lappin propelled the Drexel women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against the William & Mary Tribe in the CAA quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.
BY THE NUMBERS
Alone At The Top
With her two goals yesterday, Delaney Lappin set a pair of Drexel single-season records. Her 12 goals and 27 points eclipse the marks set by Vanessa Kara (11 and 25) from the 2015 season.
That's A First
The CAA quarterfinals and semifinals mark the first two postseason games for women's soccer on Vidas Field. Previously, all six CAA tournament games for DU had been either on the road or at a neutral site.
We'll Have Seconds
Thursday's win against William & Mary was the second ever postseason victory for the Dragons. Drexel defeated James Madison 2-0 in the CAA semifinals on November 4, 2016.
The Road To The Championship Goes Through...
Sunday's match takes on added importance thanks to Hofstra's upset against Monmouth in PK's. With the top-seeded Hawks eliminated, the winner between Drexel and Northeastern will host the CAA championship game on Saturday, November 5.
Scouting Report
Northeastern comes into the match 9-5-4 overall and went 5-2-2 in the CAA regular season. The Huskies are the third seed in the conference tournament, dropping a tiebreaker to Drexel in the final standings. NU advanced with a 2-1 win against Stony Brook on Thursday night.
Vivian Akyirem leads the offense for Northeastern with 11 goals on the season. She is one of four Huskies to be named to All-Conference teams as she was named to the First Team and All-Rookie team. Joining Akyirem as All-CAA are Jessie Hunt (First Team), Alexis Legowski (Second Team) and Holland Stam (Third Team). Hunt leads the conference and is second nationally with 12 assists.
Stam posts a 1.17 goals against average this season and leads the CAA with 102 saves to anchor the defense, also coming up with seven clean sheets on the year.
Ashley Phillips is in her seventh season at the helm of the Huskies with a record of 68-51-12. She has guided NU to the conference tournament in each year with the team, including a conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance in 2016.
All-Time Series
Drexel is 7-11-7 all-time against Northeastern with a 2-5-3 record at Vidas Field. DU has gained a result in each of their last two matches with the Huskies, winning in double overtime in 2021 and earning a draw in 2022. Both matches were on the road.
Last Time Against The Huskies
The Dragons and Huskies battled to a 2-2 draw on October 13 in Brookline, Mass. Northeastern scored 80 seconds into the match before Drexel posted a pair of second half goals. NU tallied the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining.
You're The Best Around
Drexel women's soccer was featured prominently as the CAA handed out its All-Conference awards on Wednesday. Three Dragons received major awards as Delaney Lappin was named the Attacking Player of the Year, Annalena O'Reilly was selected as the Midfielder of the Year and Ray Goon was chosen as the Co-Coach of the Year. Lappin and O'Reilly were First Team selections. Lily Dunbar made the Second Team and Elise Duffy was chosen to the All-Rookie Team.
Offensive Outburst (Part I)
The Dragons offense has been better than it has ever been before as their 37 goals have already eclipsed the previous record of 30, which was set in 2012. The 31 assists for Drexel are also a program record, besting the 25 recorded in 2003. The goal and assist totals are each third in the CAA.
Offensive Outburst (Part II)
DU has done a good job of distributing the offense as four different players have four or more goals this season. Leading the way is Delaney Lappin, whose 12 tallies this season set Dragons' single-season record. Annalena O'Reilly has seven. Casey Touey and Isabel Kuzy have five and four, respectively. It is the first time in team history that Drexel has four players with four or more goals in a season.
Getting On Top Early
Getting the opening score of the game has been a key for the Dragons this season as Drexel is 9-0-1 when scoring first. Many of those goals have come early with DU tallying in the first 10 minutes of a match nine times this season. The earliest goal came against Stony Brook when Gabrielle Perrotto found the back of the net 29 seconds in.
Consistency Is Key
A large part of Drexel's success this year has been the consistency of the starting lineup. Seven players have started all 18 matches with three others starting 17. All three in the group with 17 are underclassmen, whose only missed start was Senior Day.
Building Towards Success
The 2022 senior class has improved its win total in each of its three full seasons at Drexel. After posting five wins in 2019, DU won six games a year ago before picking up 11 victories this year. Additionally, the five victories in conference play surpass the total from the previous three seasons combined.
Starting Off Right
Drexel opened the season with three consecutive wins for just the second time in program history (2000) and were undefeated in their first 10 matches. DU was one of the final 11 teams in Division I without a loss this season and the 10 contests in a row without a setback to start the year tied for the second longest mark in CAA history, matching the 9-0-1 start for UNCW in 2004. Only the 1993 George Mason team that began 13-0-1 and was the national runner-up had a longer such stretch.
Feeling Blue
After starting the home schedule with a pair of scoreless draws despite a significant shot advantage, the Dragons opted to wear their blue kits at home against Lafayette. The change worked as Drexel went 3-0-0 at home in blue and outscored opponents 8-3. Overall while wearing blue this season, DU is 9-1-2 and has a +13 goal differential.
Up Next
The winner between the Dragons and Huskies takes on the victor of the semifinal matchup between No. 5 Towson and No. 8 Hofstra for the CAA championship on Saturday, November 5. The Drexel-Northeastern winner will host.

- It was Lappin's fourth match with two goals this season.
- Casey Touey and Gabrielle Perrotto each had an assist. For Touey it was her third helper and the second of the year for Perrotto.
- Drexel held an 8-3 edge in shots on goal and had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
- Despite chances early, the Dragons found themselves down 1-0 at the half as the Tribe scored in the 42nd minute.
- Lappin netted her 11th of the season off a scramble in the box. Touey smacked a ball that was deflected by the keeper before Lappin sent it across the line, tying the match in the 50th minute.
- Ten minutes later, Lappin struck again, cracking a shot from outside the box into the top right corner.
