Opening Tip
The Drexel University women's basketball team travels up I-95 to Boston to take on Northeastern on Sunday, February 13. Tipoff from the Cabot Center is scheduled for noon.
About Drexel
The Dragons used an 11-0 fourth quarter run to break open a close game as DU got back on the winning track with a 63-47 win against the Hofstra Pride on Friday night. Keishana Washington netted 21 to lead Drexel, extending her streak to 21 in a row with 10 or more. Hannah Nihill scored 16 and tied Bridget Scanlan for 10th on the Dragons all-time three-pointers list with 139. She also added seven assists.
DU led by five at the break at Hofstra on February 11 and carried it to a 63-47 victory, improving to 15-0 this season in games where it leads at halftime. As impressive as that would be on its own, the Dragons streak in games where they lead at the break extends back more than two years. Drexel has not lost a game it led at halftime since a 53-49 setback at Penn on December 20, 2019, a string of 38 consecutive games.
This weekend is the third conference road trip for DU. The Dragons have shown a propensity for putting in a little extra work for the latter portion of the weekend swing as in the previous two Sunday CAA road games, Drexel has gone to overtime. It needed five extra minutes to beat UNCW on January 9 before playing two OT sessions in a win at William & Mary on January 30.
Throughout her career, Nihill has averaged 1.97 steals per game, so it was a bit under her numbers when she came away with 25 swipes in the first 18 games of the year. The last three contests, however, she has reminded teams in the CAA why she is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year with 13 steals. That this is happening in February really shouldn't come as a surprise. In her career, Nihill has 134 takeaways in 50 career games in February and March, an average of 2.68 per contest and has 27 of her 48 career games with three or more steals in those months.
Scouting Northeastern
Northeastern enters the game 12-9 overall and is 6-5 in the CAA following a 66-63 loss against Delaware on Friday. It is an impressive start for the Huskies who finished 7-13 a year ago and were selected 10th out of 10 teams in this season's CAA Preseason Poll.
Leading the way for NU are senior Kendall Currence and freshman Claudia Soriano. Currence leads the team in scoring at 16.2 points per game and has reached double figures in 17 of 21 contests. Soriano nets 12.1 an outing and has been the conference Rookie of the Week five times. Donna Ntambue leads the team in rebounding at 6.7 boards per contest, and returned to the lineup on February 6 against Hofstra after a two month absence. Soriano tops the Huskies with 78 assists.
Solid defense and offensive patience have been the tone for the Huskies. Northeastern is second in the conference to Drexel, surrendering just 60.0 points per game, though that number has gone up to 63.4 in conference play. Northeastern is in the middle of the pack in the CAA in taking shots, averaging 57.1 field goal attempts per game, but makes their shots count, ranking second in the league at 42.5 percent from the floor.
In addition to the patient style, one reason for the lower number of field goal attempts is turnovers as Northeastern gives the ball up 19.0 times per game on average. They also force their share of miscues, forcing 17.0 a night.
Bridgette Mitchell is in her first season as a collegiate head coach after spending the previous two seasons as the top assistant at Pitt. As a player, she appeared in 131 games for Duke from 2006-10 and helped the Blue Devils to the Elite Eight as a senior.
All-Time Series
Sunday is the 59th all-time meeting between the Dragons and Huskies, marking the fourth most games against any opponent for Drexel behind Delaware (87), Towson (83), and Hofstra (76). DU leads the series 38-20 and has won 15 in a row against Northeastern, most recently coming away with a 63-50 win on January 14. In that game, Brugler led the Dragons with 19 points and 10 rebounds. As part of its current streak against Northeastern, Drexel has won seven in a row in Boston, including a sweep of the season series in 2020-21.
Up Next
Drexel is off until February 20 when it travels to Newark, Del. to face off against archrival Delaware. Tipoff from the Carpenter Center is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
