BALTIMORE, Md. - The Drexel men's lacrosse team fell in its season opener at UMBC on Saturday, 12-8. The Retrievers, also playing in their opener, scored six straight goals over a 13-minute stretch in the second and third quarter to break a 3-3 tie and earned the win
After UMBC's run, Drexel started to chip away at the lead. Jack Mulcahy set up Casey Waller with 6:09 to play to break a scoreless streak of a little more than 15 minutes. Just 14 seconds later, freshman Grant Isika won the face-off and scored the first goal of his career, cutting the lead to four. Sean Donnelly got on the board at the end of the quarter, and when Zach Augustine scored his second of the day, the UMBC was down to just two. However, the Retrievers scored the next three goals of the game, two by Brett Baucia, to put the game out of reach.
The two teams were tied at 3-3 midway through the second quarter after Brent McVicker and Augustine got on the board for the first time in 2022. McVicker scored a transition goal, while Augustine put home a feed from Ryan Genord on the man-up. UMBC answered with a pair of goals to take a 5-3 lead into intermission. It could have been worse as the Retrievers had numerous point-blank opportunities. Drexel's Ross Blumenthal made three straight stops from in tight on the same possession to keep the Dragons within reach. Blumenthal made nine of his 13 saves in the first half.
The Retrievers controlled possession for the first period and led 3-1 after the first period. UMBC fired 19 shots in the opening 15 minutes. The Retrievers scored the first two goals before Mulcahy put the Dragons on the board for the first time in 2022 with 2:23 to play. UMBC's Jordan Galloway answered with 48 seconds to go in the quarter to give the home team a two-goal lead.
Donnelly and Augustine each had a pair of goals in the game. Donnelly also added an assist. Mulcahy finished the game with a goal and an assist. The Dragons were outshot, 59-33, and UMBC won 14 of the games 23 face-offs.
Baucia led the Retrievers with four goals. Mike Doughty and Jordan Galloway each had a pair of goals. Tommy Lingner made 11 saves in the cage.
The Dragons will return to action on Tuesday night at Lafayette. Face-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
