DORADO, Puerto Rico - The Drexel golf team had a record-breaking final day at the Dorado Beach Collegiate on Tuesday. Drexel finished the 54-hole event in second place overall in an extremely competitive field with a school record of 25-under par. The Dragons fired a 15-under par on Tuesday at the Sugarcane Course at the Dorado Beach Resort and Club. It was the school record and it was also four shots better than any other team in the field. Freshman Brockton English had his best round as a collegian, while Drue Nicholas and Angelo Giantsopoulos finished in a tie for second place overall at 13-under par, just one shot behind the leader.
The Dragons started out fast on Tuesday and continued to play well the entire day. English, a first-year player from Shelby Township, Michigan, rebounded nicely in the third round to shoot a six-under 66, which tied for the best round of the day by any of the 81 golfers in the tournament. He had four birdie, one eagle and did not make a bogey. Nicholas and Giantsopoulos were consistent from the time the team landed in Puerto Rico. The two student-athletes both shot four-under par rounds of 68 and each shot under 70 in each of the three rounds. Their 54-hole score of 13-under par was just one shot away from the Drexel record. Connor Schmidt set that record with a 14-under par score at the Elon Phoenix Invitational in October of 2019. Nicholas had a tournament-best 19 birdies, while Giantsopouolos added 18. The Dragons led all teams with 65 birdies in the event. Jeffrey Cunningham finished his final day at 71 (-1), as all four of Drexel's scorers on Tuesday finished under par.
The 25-under par for a 54-hole event shattered the school's old record by 12 strokes. That was set back in the fall of 2005 at the JMU Invitational. The team record for 18 holes was also broken. Drexel shot three strokes better than they did during the Villanova Wildcat Invitational in April of 2019.
"I'm just so proud of this group," said Drexel Head Coach Ben Feld. "They believe so hard in one another and yesterday we started to see what true belief can produce. I feel like this week, competing at the level that we did was just the jumping off point for our group. We have endless opportunity ahead and I know they are excited to get back to work and see what's possible."
