Errico Ties Program Record
NORFOLK, Va. – The Drexel softball team concluded its time at the Pirate Invitational on Sunday with a win over the Norfolk State Spartans, 8-6. The Dragons finish the three-day invitational with a 4-1 record.
Brooklyn Daly (3-2) got the start in the circle for the Dragons and went five and two-thirds. The graduate student allowed six runs on eight hits. Jessica Schable entered the game in relief and went one and a third to close the game.
Kristi DiMeo went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. The graduate student ends her Pirate Invitational with seven hits and six RBIs.
Ashley Errico led the way for Drexel offensively. The sophomore hit two two-run home runs in both of her official at-bats. The Easton, Pa. native tied a program record for most home runs in a single game. That record was previously set earlier this season by Jackie Masone. Errico also drew two walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons hit their fourth home run of the season in the first inning of the game. With DiMeo on first, Errico turned a gloomy 1-2 count into a positive for Drexel. The sophomore hit her second home run of the season and gave Drexel its early 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Errico did it again. The Easton, Pa. native got ahold of a pitch while she was ahead in the count and sent the ball over the fence for her second home run of the game. The round-tripper also scored Jackie Masone.
Norfolk State cut into the Drexel lead in the bottom of the fourth. A double by Lily Potter cleared the bases and scored two runs for the Spartans.
Drexel tallied three insurance runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to five. The Dragons scored the first run on a wild pitch. Then, with runners on second and third, Garcia cleared the bases. The junior took a 2-2 count and sent a ball down the left field line. The hit scored two runs.
In the sixth, Drexel tacked on one more run. With Grace Abbonizio on third, DiMeo singled up the middle. At the end of their frame, the Dragons led, 8-2.
The Spartans fired back with a four-run sixth inning to pull within two of the Dragons. Norfolk State tallied five hits in its portion of the inning. That was all the runs that the Spartans could grab as Schable was able to tally three outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Dragons head to Baltimore, Md., to face Coppin State in a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and return on Sunday for a single game at noon.
