Dragons Fall to Delaware in Rare Tripleheader

NEWARK, Del. – The Drexel softball team and Delaware Blue Hens competed in a rare tripleheader on Sunday afternoon in Newark, Del. After the first game of the doubleheader was called in the 13th inning due to unplayable field conditions on Saturday, Delaware (24-11, 7-2 CAA) came back on Sunday to win, 2-1. The Blue Hens took games two and three by a score of 7-4 and 2-0, respectively. Drexel dropped to 18-12 overall with a 4-5 tab in conference play.
GAME ONE
The series opener between both games went almost 14 innings long before being postponed due to unplayable field conditions. The teams rescheduled the game to be finished before playing a doubleheader on Sunday.
Brooklyn Daly tossed the best game of her career, pitching 13 and two-thirds. Daly held the Blue Hens to one run on six hits. Meghan Conroy (4-2) took over pitching duties when the game resumed play on Sunday and was charged with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams could only push across one run in the 14-inning game. Drexel scored on a wild pitch in the top of the eighth and Delaware answered in the bottom of the frame with a single to left center.
When the game resumed on Sunday, Delaware took two pitches before hitting a walk off homerun to center field.
GAME TWO
Conroy (4-3) started in the circle for game two and went four and a third. Conroy was tabbed for two earned runs on six hits. Jessica Schable entered the game in relief and went one and two-thirds.
Ameryn Humble went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles in game two.
Lily Meuninck entered the game as a pinch hitter and hit a single that scored two runs in the fourth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Delaware jumped out to a quick start in the first inning. A double to right center and a few errors, allowed Delaware to get a 2-0 start in game three.
Starting in the top of the second, Drexel scored four unanswered runs. Trivelpiece hit a double to left center and scored Ashley Errico. In the fourth, Meuninck singled to center and scored two more runs. In the fifth, Trivelpiece beat out a throwing error. Jackie Masone scored on the play. At the end of the top of the fifth, Drexel had a 4-2 lead.
Delaware scored four runs in the fifth and sixth to earn its second victory of the day.
GAME THREE
Lindsay Nelson (4-5) started in the circle and went six innings, holding the Blue Hens to one earned run on two hits. Nelson fanned out five batters in the effort.
Humble and Grace Abbonizio both went 2-for-3 in the series finale.
Delaware used two sacrifice flies to score its two runs in the series finale.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel turns its attention towards a nonconference meetup against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Hawks will travel to the Drexel Softball Field on Tuesday, April 12 to face the Dragons in a pair of games. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
