Schable Near-Perfect in Game Two; Drexel Tops Maryland Eastern Shore in Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team topped the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks on Tuesday afternoon in both games of a doubleheader at the Drexel Softball Field. Drexel (20-12) downed the Hawks (14-24) in game one, 3-1, and then defeated them again in game two, 8-0.
GAME ONE
Meghan Conroy (5-3) earned the game one start in the circle for the Dragons and pitched a complete game, holding the Hawks to one run on 10 hits.
Jackie Masone went 2-for-3, including a home run in game one. The freshman scored two runs in the effort.
Sarah Clinton went 1-for-3 and also hit a home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Maryland Eastern Shore singled up the middle in the second inning to take the lead. The lead would hold until the Drexel lineup turned over in the fourth inning.
With the second pitch of the inning, Clinton sent a ball over the center field fence and tallied the second round-tripper of the season. Later in the inning, Masone scored on a wild pitch. Drexel owned a 2-1 lead at the end of the inning.
The Dragons tallied an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Masone took the first pitch of the at bat and cleared the center field fence for her seventh home run of the season.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (2-2) was near-perfect in the second game of the doubleheader. The junior went all five innings, held the Hawks to one hit, and fanned two batters. In addition, Schable only pitched 38 pitches.
Clinton went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Masone also went 2-for-3 but tallied two RBIs and scored one run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead over the Hawks. Kristi DiMeo hit a double to left center and scored Clinton from second, and Brianna Allamillo singled through the right side and scored Mia Garza from second and DiMeo from third.
In the bottom of the second, the Dragons hit back-to-back doubles to score a pair of runs. Clinton took an 0-2 count to the left field wall and scored Grace Abbonizio from third. Masone followed up with an RBI double of her own. This time, the ball hit off of the left-center fence. At the end of the second, Drexel led by five.
In the fourth, Masone launched her second home run of the day to right center and gave Drexel a six-run lead.
The Dragons added two in the bottom of the fifth to enforce the eight-run mercy rule. Clinton doubled to right-center and scored Backstrom and Alamillo.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons return to conference play on Saturday, April 16, against Elon. The Dragons and Phoenix will meet for a doubleheader, starting at noon, and meet on Sunday for the series finale at 1 p.m.
