Brian Voelker picks up his 100th win at Drexel
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Nine different players scored for Drexel as the Dragons picked up an important 10-7 victory at Hofstra on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Dragons (6-2, 2-1 CAA) moved into a first-place tie in the Colonial Athletic Association with two games to play. Drexel Head Coach Brian Voelker recorded his 100th win as a Dragon. Zach Augustine scored twice to lead the offense, while Ross Blumenthal had 10 saves, including four in the fourth quarter as the Dragons won for the seventh straight time at Hofstra (5-8, 1-2)).
Drexel took control of the game in the third quarter. Leading by just two heading into the second half, the Dragons rattled off four goals in a span of less than four and a half minutes to open up a 9-3 advantage. Augustine opened the scoring on a man-up situation in the opening minutes. Matt Martin, playing in just his second game of the year, increased the lead to 7-3. After Hofstra won the face-off, the Dragons' defense accounted for the next goal. Cole Sprinkle forced a turnover near midfield that Lucas Snider picked up and started a transition opportunity. Snider found defenseman Brennan Greenwald, who rifled a shot home for his second score of the year. The Dragons ended the run with a Max Semple goal. For Semple, it was his 30th of the season. He became the first Drexel freshmen with 30 goals since Cole Shafer had 35 goals during the 2014 season.
Hofstra answered Drexel's run with one of its own. The Pride closed the third quarter with three straight goals to cut the lead to just three. It stayed a three-goal game until midway through the fourth. Ryan Sheridan dodged past a few Dragons into the center of the field and ripped a 15-yarder in traffic past Blumenthal to give the Pride life. That was short lived as Ryan Genord set up Augustine with six minutes to play to make it 10-7. That's the way it would end as Drexel stayed unbeaten at Shuart Stadium since 2011.
Drexel opened the scoring in the game less than four minutes in. Jack Mulcahy dodged on the right side and was able to find the back of the net as he was falling down. That goal gave Mulcahy 100 career points at Drexel. He joined teammate Ryan Genord as current members of the100-point club. The Dragons increased their lead when Aidan Coll put home a Tristan Plotts pass midway through the first. The teams exchanged goals to close out the quarter as DU led 3-2. Drexel's goal was scored in transition as Sean Quinn raced up field and calmly found Sean Donnelly sitting in front. The sophomore spun and fired home a shot from less than 10 yards away.
The second quarter was a defensive struggle. Each team had just one goal heading to the final minute. Casey Waller scored for the Dragons and that was answered by Gerard Kane's score for the Pride. However, Ryan Genord sent the Dragons to the locker room with a two-goal lead. The senior took a nice feed from Donnelly, who was set up behind the net, and rifled a left-handed shot past Mac Gates with just five seconds remaining in the second quarter. That made it 5-3 in favor of the Dragons.
Drexel outshot the Pride, 43-30. The defense had its best game of the year, allowing a season-low seven goals. It also forced 11 of the Pride's 20 turnovers. Liam Rosato won 13 of the 21 face-off attempts in the contest. Gates made 15 saves in goal for the Pride.
The Dragons will return home for Senior Day next Saturday. Drexel will host Delaware beginning at 4 p.m. The Dragons wrap up the regular season the following Friday at UMass.
