ELON, N.C. – The Drexel softball team fell to the Elon Phoenix in the series finale on Sunday in Elon, N.C. The Dragons (20-15, 4-8 CAA) scored three runs in the first inning to set themselves up for a big conference victory, but Elon (23-18, 6-6 CAA) scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead.
Brooklyn Daly (9-4) four innings and was responsible for the five Phoenix runs in the fifth. Lindsay nelson entered the game in relief and pitched the remainder of the game holding Elon to no hits and only one walk.
Ameryn Humble, Maddie Kapsimalis and Megan Trivelpiece were all responsible for Drexel's three runs in the first inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Humble started the scoring for Drexel in the first. The sophomore singled through the right side to score Jackie Masone. Then with the bases loaded, Kapsimalis hit a well placed single straight up the middle and plated Kristi DiMeo. To wrap up Drexel's scoring in the first, Trivelpiece hit a ball up the middle and it was deflected off the pitcher and went right to the second basemen who threw it to first and got Trivelpiece out. Scoring on the play was Humble.
Daly held the phoenix in check until the bottom of the fifth, when Elon put five runs on the scoreboard. A triple to right field scored two runs. The Phoenix tied the game on a squeeze bunt that dropped perfectly in front of Daly. With the game tied, Elon sent a home run over the left field fence to plate two runs.
In its last try, Drexel worked to erase the two-run deficit. Ashley Errico singled to left field on a 3-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The singles plated Sarah Clinton and chipped away at the two-run Phoenix lead. That was all that Drexel could get as Elon's defense tightened up and grabbed the third out.
