PHILADELPHIA – Ryan Genord tied a career-high with five goals, but Towson scored the final two goals of the game, including the game-winner with 2:13 to play as the Tigers edged Drexel, 13-12. It was the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
The teams went to the final quarter tied at 9-9 and it was a one-goal game the rest of the way. Towson (4-6, 1-0) took its first lead since the opening minutes when Andrew Milani scored with two Drexel players in the penalty box at the 13:11 mark. Genord's unassisted goal tied the game and Jack Mulcahy converted a feed from Sean Donnelly to give the Dragons (4-5, 0-1) a lead with 9:49 to play. Ryan Swain and Genord traded goals as the Dragons held a one-goal advantage with less than five minute to play. However, Towson answered when Luke Shilling scored on a quick pass from Alex Reid with 3:44 remaining. Less than two minutes later, Reid, after a timeout, came around a screen near the cage and gave the Tigers the lead for good. Drexel had two good opportunities in the final minute, but could not score as the Tigers escaped West Philadelphia with a key CAA win.
The game was close throughout as neither team was able to lead by more than three goals. Drexel ratted off three straight goals, including a man-up score by Aidan Coll, in the last 4:15 of the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead. Drexel led 7-4 late in the second quarter, but Towson was able to close the first half with two goals as the Dragons intermission lead was just one at 7-6.
Genord recorded his third career five-goal game. The senior now has 75 career goals and 107 career points. Jack Mulcahy chipped in with a pair of goals and Donnelly finished the game with three points. Casey Waller, Coll, Max Semple and Anthony Rosato had Drexel's other goals. Ross Blumenthal made seven saves in the first half, while Drew McGill had four in the second half.
James Avanzato led Towson with four goals and also had an assist. Swain scored twice and finished with three points, while three other Tigers had two points. Shane Brennan turned aside 16 Drexel shots, including two in the final minute. Matt Constantinides had 21 face-off wins and snared 16 ground balls.
Towson dominated possession and won 21 of 29 face-offs. Drexel was able to force a season-high 14 turnovers as the Tigers committed 23 miscues on the afternoon. Sean Quinn led Drexel with four caused turnovers, while Jack Farrell and Pat Udovich each forced three turnovers. Drexel outshot the visitors, 42-39, while Towson had two more ground balls than Drexel.
