Drexel will need Delaware to win on Saturday to make CAA Championships
AMHERST, Mass. - UMass scored six of the first seven goals in the second half to break open a close game and defeated Drexel, 13-7. The win guaranteed UMass (8-5, 3-2) a spot in next week's CAA Championships. Drexel (6-7, 2-3) will now need help on Saturday if it is to qualify for the Championships that will be played at Vidas Field starting Thursday. The Dragons will only qualify if Delaware defeats Fairfield tomorrow.
UMass dominated possession in the first half but led by just a goal at the break. Gabriel Procyk scored two goals in the first three minutes to give UMass the early lead. After a face-off violation, Drexel was able to get its first shot off and that resulted in a Max Semple goal. It started a three-goal Drexel run as both Ryan Genord and Casey Waller got on the board.
UMass opened the second quarter with a three-goal run of its own, capped off by a Grant Breyo man-up goal just three minutes into the quarter. Once again the Dragons answered back. Genord made a nice move inside and finished with his right hand, trimming the deficit to just one goal. Less than a minute later, Jack Mulcahy evened the score at 5-5.
The second half was all UMass. The Minutemen scored four times in the third quarter and held Drexel to just one goal, that by Zach Augustine. Kevin Tobin then scored three straight goals of his own in a span of six minutes over the third and fourth quarter. That extended the lead to five and Drexel would be able to muster just one goal the rest of the night.
UMass won 17 of the 24 face-offs and held a huge advantage in time of possession. They outshot the Dragons, 43-29, and had double the ground balls. The UMass defense forced 10 turnovers as Drexel committed 18 on the day. The Dragons really struggled with the UMass ride as they converted just 17 of their 24 clear attempts.
Waller and Genord each had a pair of goals in the loss. Mulcahy had a goal and an assist. Ross Blumenthal made 14 stops in the cage.
Kevin Tobin and Logan Liljeberg each had three goals and an assist to lead the Minutemen. Procyk had the first three goals of the game for UMass, while Mike Tobin handed out three assists. Matt Knote made just seven saves, but two of them came from in close while the game was close early in the third period.
