HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel softball team defeated the Hofstra Pride in the series finale on Sunday afternoon, 4-3. The Dragons (24-22, 5-13 CAA) scored four runs in the third inning to down the Pride (18-25, 11-6 CAA) and kept Drexel's playoff hopes alive.
Drexel's playoff hopes are still alive. The Dragons are currently fighting with Charleston for the fifth and final spot in the CAA Tournament. Next weekend, the last team will be decided when Drexel hosts UNCW while the Cougars travel to Delaware.
Jessica Schable (4-2) pitched a complete game, holding the Pride to three runs on six hits.
Five different Dragons recorded a hit in the game. Of those five, four either scored or drove in a run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hofstra found a way to score one run and load the bases. Schable got out of the inning, causing two foul-outs and a popup in the infield.
Drexel fired back in the third inning and took the lead. Starting at the top of the lineup, Sarah Clinton hit a single to center field and then stole second. With the speedy Izzy Alamillo up, Hofstra took too much time on a groundball in the infield and allowed Alamillo to reach. Kristi DiMeo drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases up for Ameryn Humble. The sophomore also drew a walk in four pitches and brought home the team's first run. Mia Garza was next up, and she singled to left field. Alamillo scored on the play. Ashley Errico had her chance and hit a ball down the left field line to score Grace Abbonizio, who was running for DiMeo. To cap off Drexel's scoring run, Megan Trivelpiece hit a hard ground ball down the left line and struck the third base bag. The ricochet went right to the Pride's shortstop, who raced Garza to the bag. However, Humble crossed Homeplate and gave Drexel the run that would prove to be the game-winner.
By scoring two runs, Hofstra chipped away at the deficit in the fourth inning. The Pride hit a double to right field that scored one and then hit a single that scored the game's final run.
Schable was lights out in the final two innings of the game. The junior did not allow a run and faced one batter over the minimum.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons finish their nonconference slate on Tuesday, May 3, as they travel to Baltimore, Md., to face Morgan State in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
