PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's defense held Albany to just 52 points en route to a convincing 71-52 victory against UAlbany on Saturday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Amari Williams had his second straight double-double as the Dragons improved to 6-5 on the season.
The Dragons went on an 11-0 run midway through the first half to break a 12-12 tie. Drexel would not trail again in the game as they held the Great Danes (6-5) without a point for a span of 6:22. UAlbany would trail by as many as 11 in the half before it cut the lead to eight at intermission. Jamie Bergens and Williams each had seven points to lead the Dragons.
Drexel came out strong in the second half, scoring the first seven points in a span of less than two minutes to take control of the game. Drexel's lead stayed at 12 points or more the rest of the way as the team had contributions from up and down the bench.
Williams recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds for his 20th career double-double. Mate Okros, who was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time since opening night, added 10 points and was 2-for-4 from behind the arc. Bergens finished the afternoon with nine rebounds and three assists. Garfield Turner scored eight points and picked up nine rebounds in just 11 minutes. The Dragons dominated the glass, outrebounding the Great Danes, 54-26. It was the highest rebound margin for Drexel against a Division I team since the 2012-13 outrebounded UNCW by 28. Daryl McCoy (17) and Dartaye Ruffin (14) combined for 31 boards in that game.
Albany was led by Amar'e Marshall and Sebastain Thomas, who each scored 10 points. The Great Danes were held to just 31 percent shooting and made just four of their 22 long-range attempts.
The Dragons play their final home non-conference game on Monday at 11 a.m. There will be a number of local schools participating in a School Day with the early start to the game.
