Men's Lacrosse Opens 2023 Against UMBC on Saturday at Vidas

PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel men's lacrosse team begins its season on Saturday at Vidas Field. Drexel will face UMBC at 1 p.m. in the opener for both teams. Coach Brian Voelker's team returns six starters, including three of the four top scorers from a year ago as well as its starting goalkeeper.
About the Dragons
Drexel is picked to finish third in the CAA according to the coaches poll. The Dragons advanced to the CAA semifinals a year ago before falling to Delaware. Jack Mulcahy was named the CAA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after winning the award a year ago. He led the team with 25 assists and 44 points in 2022. Sean Donnelly and Max Semple are back on attack for DU. Donnelly had 20 goals and 41 points last season, while Semple led the team with 34 goals. Luke Tomak missed last season due to injury but will be back in the midfield along with Casey Waller. The defense, led by Ross Blumenthal in the cage, will be a veteran group. Patrick Udovich and Brendan Donnelly return as does short stick middie George Grippo.
The Series
UMBC leads the series, 5-1. Last season, the Dragons fell to the Retrievers in Baltimore, 12-8. Donnelly and Zach Augustine each had a pair of goals for Drexel, while Mulcahy finished the game with a goal and an assist. The Dragons were outshot, 59-33, and UMBC won 14 of the games 23 face-offs. Last year was the first meeting since the 1995 season between the two schools.

The Dragons will be back in action on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. Drexel will host Lafayette at Vidas Field. The game can be seen live on Lacrosse TV.
