Nelson Fans Seven in Dragons First Conference Win
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Drexel softball team split a conference-opening doubleheader against CAA newcomers North Carolina A & T on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro. After an initial rain delay, the Aggies (6-17) took game one, 5-1. In the second half of the two-game day, Drexel (4-13) notched its first conference victory, 3-2.
GAME ONE
Jessica Schable (2-6) started the game in the circle and went 4.2 innings striking out three batters. Holly Spletzer entered the game in relief and held the Aggies hitless in 1.1 innings of work.
Ameryn Humble went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the first game. Izzy Alamillo continued her hitting ways, finishing game one by going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A&T struck first and also struck fast. The home team scored its first run in the first inning by way of an RBI single to left field.
Drexel evened the game at one in the bottom of the first. The Dragons earned their first run in a gritty hard-earned way. Alamillo led off the inning and hit a single to right field. Next up, Savaanah Garcia dropped a bunt and drew the throw to first for the force out. Meanwhile, Alamillo went first to third and slid in safely with a wrap-around slide to beat the tag. Alamillo then scored on a Humble grounder to shortstop that ended up being an error.
The Aggies then scored four unanswered runs for the rest of the game. In the third, an RBI double and a groundout pushed A&T to a 3-1 lead. In the fifth inning, the Aggies hit a pair of home runs to push their lead to 5-1.
GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (2-7) pitched a complete game, holding A & T to two runs on five hits and fanning seven batters. The seven strikeouts are a game-high for Nelson.
Alamillo went 2-for-4 with a double in game two. After the two games on Saturday, Alamillo raised her batting average to a team-leading, .320
Humble followed game one with another quality game at the plate in game two. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when A&T broke through. The Aggies took advantage of a fielding miscue to score their first run of the game.
The Dragons did not let that run stay on the board by itself for long. Drexel scored one run in the next three innings to set itself up for victory. In the top of the fourth, Lily Meuninck singled to right field to score Humble and tie the game at one. In the fifth, Devyn Demchak scored on a wild pitch to give Drexel the lead. Finally, in the top of the sixth, Mia Garza hit a long single to left center to score Kylee Guerrera.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies had the winning run at the plate. The home team was able to pull within one and put the tying run on third. Nelson produced a comebacker that she was able to knock down and throw to first to end the game.
