GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Drexel softball team defeated the North Carolina A&T Aggies, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon in Greenboro, N.C. The Dragons (5-13, 2-1 CAA) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win the team's opening conference series.
Lindsay Nelson started the game and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking one batter out. Jessica Schable (3-6) entered the game in relief and held the Aggies scoreless through three innings of work.
Izzy Alamillo completed her weekend going 8-for-12 with three runs and two doubles across three games. In Sunday's game, the sophomore went 2-for-4 with two runs and a double.
Ameryn Humble went 1-for-2 in the rubber match and tallied an RBI and a run. The junior completed the series going 5-for-9 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel struck first and struck early. Alamillo led off and caused a throwing miscue. The sophomore took two extra bags and slid into third base. With one out, Humble drew a walk and took advantage of the Aggie pitcher who was not paying attention and took second base. Drexel scored its first run on a single by Errico through the left side. Meuninck, the next batter up, hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Humble and push the score to 2-0.
In the bottom of the first, the Aggies scored a pair of runs by way of a two-out double down the left field line.
The game fell quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning when A&T scored a run by the way of a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh, Drexel led off with a double to right field by Alamillo. Lana Mooney followed the sophomore and laid down a perfect bunt to reach base safely and put runners on the corner with no outs. Mooney, like Humble at the beginning of the game, then took second when A&T was not paying attention. With runners now on second and third with no outs, Humble hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and scored Alamillo. With Errico up, Mooney took third on a wild pitch, while Errico drew a walk. While A&T was making sure Mooney was not going to take off for home, Errico forced a rundown and took second. Lily Meuninck reached first on an error and scored Mooney and then Errico scored on Mia Garza's popup to shallow centerfield.
The Aggies tried to claw back into the game in the bottom of the seventh, but Schable shut down the rally, stranding runners on first and second.
