PHILADELPHIA - Drexel's second half rally came up short as Hofstra defeated the Dragons, 8-7, at Vidas Field on Saturday. The loss snapped Drexel's five-game winning streak. Drexel is now 7-4 overall and 4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Hofstra improved to 4-8 and 2-3 in league play.
Drexel trailed 7-4 early in the fourth quarter after the Pride's Griffin Turner scored his second goal of the game just 64 seconds into the final stanza. The Dragons were able to put up a pair of goals in a stretch of 33 seconds as Casey Waller and Max Semple found the net to make it a 7-6 game. Three minutes later exactly, Turner was at it again. He completed the hat trick and gave Hofstra a needed insurance score. Drexel wasn't finished yet as Jack Mulcahy fired a left-handed shot that just snuck by Hofstra's Mac Gates, trimming the deficit to one. It was Mulcahy's fourth goal of the day. With less than a minute left, the Dragons had the ball and a chance to even it. Casey Waller had his shot from about 15 yards on the left wing turned aside and Hofstra gathered possession. The Dragons were able to get the ball back deep in their own end, but were unable to get a shot off after a Hofstra player was penalized with just 1.5 seconds to play.
Hofstra controlled play in the first half and led 6-2 at intermission. The Pride scored four of the first five goals and worked the shot clock down on almost every possession. Hofstra kept the Dragons off the board for the entire second period and for a span of more than 24 minutes. Gates had a big night on the road in the cage, turning aside 14 Drexel shots in earning the win. Turner finished with five points, while Matt Elder had three goals.
Mulcahy had his second five-point game of the season. The senior moved into a tie for 19th place on the Drexel career scoring list with 138 points. Waller added a pair of goals. The Dragons' Justin Joseph won 13 of the 19 face-offs. Ross Blumenthal had 10 saves, but Drexel wasn't able to overcome some untimely turnovers. Both teams turned the ball over 18 times on Saturday.
The Dragons will look to get back on track next Saturday in a crucial CAA contest at Delaware.
