
Delaware Defeats Drexel in Newark, 18-13

NEWARK, Del. - NEWARK, Del. – No. 16 Delaware broke open a close game with 11 second half goals and defeated Drexel, 18-13, in Delaware on Saturday afternoon. Drexel fell to 7-5 on the year and is now 4-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play, while the Hens are now 10-3 and 6-0. Despite the loss, with other results around the CAA the Dragons clinched a spot in the upcoming CAA Championships.
The game went back and forth in the early going, before Delaware scored the final two goals of the first half to break a 5-5 tie. Jason Kolar and Cam Acchione tallied goals just 25 seconds apart. Acchione's came on the man-up after Drexel was called with a hold.
Drexel responded early in the second half as Luke Tomak converted with the man up and less than a minute later Jack Mulcahy tied it up. The teams would then trade goals to make it 8-8. Jason Kolar gave the Hens a brief lead before Sean Donnelly answered for Drexel with a man-up goal at the 11:20 mark of the third. The momentum swung the Blue Hens way after that. Delaware scored six of the next seven goals as the Dragons were only able to score once in a span of almost 15 minutes. UD took a 14-9 lead when Tye Kurtz set up Acchione for his second of the day. The Dragons got as close as three goals after Tomak and face-off man Justin Joseph scored just six seconds apart with 6:51 to play. Delaware countered with three straight goals on its way to clinching the CAA regular season title. The Blue Hens will host the CAA Championships starting on May 4.
Tomak led Drexel with three goals and an assist. Mulcahy and Ben Scandone each scored twice for DU. Ross Blumenthal made 14 saves in the loss.
Kolar scored four times to lead the Hens. Five other Delaware players scored two goals.
The Dragons close the regular season on Friday night at 5 p.m. It will be Senior Night at Vidas Field when Monmouth makes its first visit as a CAA member.
