The Drexel softball team was defeated in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday against Penn, 6-5. Penn picked up its winning run in the eighth inning to down Drexel at the Drexel Softball Field.

Lindsay Nelson started the game and went six and two-thirds, nearly shutting the door on the Quakers. Jessica Schable (7-12) entered in relief and only allowed one hit through one and a third.

Lily Meuninck went 3-for-4 with a home run and an RBI single. The sophomore also scored two runs herself.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Savaanah Garcia singled through the right side and scored Meuninck. A batter later, Abbonizio grounded out to short but scored Mia Garza.

The game fell quiet until the fifth inning when Penn scored a run. In the sixth, Penn tied the game at two.

In the bottom of the sixth, Meuninck broke the tie with the third home run of her sophomore campaign. Drexel headed into the seventh inning with a one run lead.

In the top of the seventh, and with two outs, Penn hit back-to-back home runs. One round tripper was for two runs and the other was a solo home run. The three runs gave the Quakers a 5-3 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Drexel's offense scored two runs to force extra innings. Ashley Errico doubled down the left field line and scored Ameryn Humble from second and Meuninck singled up the middle to score Errico.

In the eighth, Penn scored its sixth run and then kept Drexel off the bases in bottom of the eighth.

WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel sets its sights on the weekend series against Monmouth. The two teams will meet on Saturday for a doubleheader and will return on Sunday to play the series finale. First pitch on Saturday is slated for noon.
