Dragons Sweep Rider in Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team swept the Rider Broncs in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field. The Dragons took game one, 5-3, then took game two 4-1.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (3-17) tossed a complete game and held the Broncs to just three runs on six hits. The Senior also fanned three batters in the effort.
Izzy Alamillo went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs. Ashley Errico, Mia Garza and Grace Abbonizio all went 2-for-3 in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel began the day with a pair of runs in the first inning. Lilly Meuninck doubled down the left line and scored Alamillo on the play. Later in the inning, Errico and Meuninck pulled off a double steal and scored Drexel's second run of the game.
In the second inning, Alamillo hit a single to left field and Abbonizio scored on the play. Rider fired back in the third and fourth and scored three runs.
Drexel scored the winning run in the fifth inning when Errico singled to center field and scored Alamillo on the play. An Inning later, Abbonizio tripled down the right field line and scored Kylee Guerrera to push the score to 5-3.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (9-12) went six innings, conceding five hits and an unearned run in the game.
Lana Mooney went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in the six inning affair.
Meuninck was the other Dragon who collected two hits. The sophomore also tallied an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rider scored the first run of the game in the second inning of the game. But it didn't hold up for long. Madison Gayle smashed a home run over the fence in left center to tie the game. Drexel then scored two more runs in the second inning. Mooney doubled to right field and scored Alamillo and then Meuninck singled to score Mooney.
In the fifth inning, Garza hit a sharp line drive to left field and scored Mooney to notch Drexel's fourth run of the game. The game was then called after the top of the sixth due to inclement weather.
UP NEXT
Drexel returns to conference play and continue to search for a spot in the CAA tournament this weekend as it travels to UNCW to face the Seahawks in a three-game series. The two teams will face each other in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. then meet on Sunday, April 30 to play the final game at 1 p.m.
