Drexel Falls to No. 11 Maryland in the First Round of the NCAA Championships, 11-6

HARRISONBURG, VA. – The Drexel University women's lacrosse team saw its season come to a close in the First Round of the NCAA Championships with a 11-6 defeat against No. 11 Maryland on Friday evening from the campus of James Madison University. The Dragons went 12-6 this season, tied for the program's second most wins in a year and competed in its third consecutive NCAA Tournament, a first for the team.
BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
After an early goal by the Terps, Harding found her 33rd goal of the season which tied the game at one. Following tallies by UMD, Marano secured her second goal of the season. The opening quarter ended with a 6-2 advantage for Maryland.
SECOND QUARTER
The timeframe was a defensive battle as only a pair of goals were earned. Cuocco compiled three saves and the defense allowed five shots on goal. The game entered intermission with an 8-2 lead for the Terps.
THIRD QUARTER
The Dragons cut the deficit to five as Marano directed a pass to Harding in front of the cage for her second score of the contest. Defenders McHugh and Peighton Bement were credited with caused turnovers. Headed into the final fifteen minutes, Drexel trailed by seven.
FOURTH QUARTER
DU was not going down without a fight as three players scored consecutively within three minutes. Simpson snuck a shot past the Maryland goalie on a free position opportunity with eight minutes remaining. Bednarik earned her 47th goal and then assisted on a goal by Harding which cut the Dragons deficit to four.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Grace Harding led the offense with a hat trick in the contest.
- Corinne Bednarik, Kate Marano, Hayleigh Simpson also scored for Drexel. Additionally, Bednarik earned an assist and found six draw controls.
- In goal, Jenika Cuocco stopped 12 shots and scooped up a pair of groundballs.
- Defender, Belle McHugh caused three Maryland turnovers and picked up two groundballs for Drexel's defensive unit.
- The battle for draw controls ended with a tie of ten for each team. Maura Cissel closed the season with 73 draws for the Dragons.
