PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team was defeated in a nonconference matchup against Saint Joseph's, 8-1.
Lindsay Nelson earned the start in the circle for Drexel and went three innings. Jessica Schable entered in relief and pitched four innings. Both pitchers combined for four strikeouts on the day.
Izzy Alamillo hit the first home run of her career in the first inning of the game. The swing, which seemed to be more of a defensive swing at a pitch high and in, launched the ball over the right field fence and gave Drexel a lead in the bottom of the first inning.
SJU returned in the top of the second and scored two runs. In the third inning, the Hawks scored two more runs to double their lead. The visitors then scored four runs between the fifth and seventh to put the game out of reach for Drexel.
The Dragons begin the last series of the 2023 campaign on Friday. The Hofstra Pride will visit University City and play a series of three games. On Friday, the Dragons will celebrate the career and accomplishments of Savaanah Garcia prior to playing a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
