NEWARK, Del. – A goal by Isaiah Whittaker-Francis in the 89th minute of play lifted the Drexel Dragons over the Delaware Blue Hens, 2-1 on Friday night. Drexel scored two goals in the second half to defeat the Blue Hens in what could be the final match as CAA rivals.
With the win, Drexel has 13 conference points and is in sole possession of second place. The Dragons close conference play on November 2nd against the fifth-place Charleston Cougars.
Delaware was the first to score. The Blue Hens struck in the 25th minute of the match after a run by Richard Monath was completed by Sam Donnellan. The goal was the only strike of the half, despite the Dragons taking more shots than the Blue Hens, 9-3.
The Dragons evened the match in the 67th minute. Whittaker-Francis fed a through-ball to Dominick Bachstein, who was charging through the middle of the box. The graduate student made a touch past the diving Delaware keeper and finished the play with an open net. The assist was Whittaker-Francis' first assist of the season. The goal was Bachstein's 11th of the season, giving him the lead in the conference.
Drexel and Delaware traded blows for the rest of the half but neither team could find the back of the net until the final minutes of the match. The Dragons punched a shot past the Delaware keeper with just over a minute left to play. Ethan Schaefer settled the ball on the baseline and then serviced the it into the center of the box where Whittaker-Francis put the Dragons ahead.
The Dragons round out their non-conference schedule with a Philadelphia Soccer Six matchup against Villanova. Action against the Wildcats is set for Tuesday, October 29, at 3 p.m. at Higgins Soccer Complex.
