Dragons Upended on Second Day of Mercer Classic

MACON, Ga. – The Drexel softball team continued its play at the Mercer Heart of Georgia Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons fell in game one, 7-3, to Dayton. In Game two, Mercer outlasted the Dragons, 12-5
GAME ONE
Allison Hoppe (0-2) started game one and went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Natalie Alldred entered the game in relief and pitched the rest of the game, allowing four runs on three hits.
Devyn Demchak went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Izzy Alamillo and Kalea Calugay round out Drexel's hits for the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel scored its first run in the second inning after Demchak hit a double to left field. Jackie Masone scored for the Dragons on the play.
Dayton did not take long to fire back. The Flyers earned two runs on an infield single and a wild pitch to jump to a 2-1 lead. In the third, Dayton tacked on two more runs to push its lead to three.
In the top of the fifth, Calugay singled up the middle and scored Demchak. On that play, Grace Abbonizio advanced to third and set up Drexel's third run of the game. With runners on first and third, Drexel scored on a steal-and-stop.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, Dayton earned a bases loaded walk and a single up the middle. Those two plays scored three runs for the Flyers, as they pushed the score to 7-3.
GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (0-2) started game two and went 4.2 innings. Mercer scored 10 runs on nine hits. Hoppe entered in relief and pitched 1.1 innings. The freshman allowed two runs on two hits.
Demchak continued her dominant hitting performance, going 3-for-3 and scoring a run. Abbonizio went 2-for-3 and also scored a run.
Calugay did the most damage for Drexel, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. The Bears hit a three-run home run to left field.
In the third, Alamillo singled up the middle and scored Demchak. Later in the inning, the Dragons had a bases loaded situation with Calugay up at the plate. The sophomore hit a grand slam to give Drexel its first lead. The home run was Calugay's first of her career.
Mercer answered in the bottom of the third with a three-run home run. From there, the Bears would score six more unanswered runs.

Drexel finishes its appearance at the Mercer Heart of Georgia Classic on Sunday. The Dragons will play one more game against Dayton at 10 a.m.
