Gayle Lifts Drexel Over Sacred Heart With Late-Game Home Run, 5-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A home run in the sixth inning by Madison Gayle lifted the Drexel Dragons past Sacred Heart on the second day of the UNC Greensboro Spiro Classic Saturday. The Dragons were upended in game one by UNC Greensboro, 7-3. The Dragons then turned around and defeated the Pioneers, 5-3.
GAME ONE
Natalie Alldred (0-2) earned the start and went 2.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Allison Hoppe completed the game, pitching 3.1 innings, and holding UNCG to just one earned run on three hits.
Lindsey Hunt led the Dragons in the hit column, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Dragons drew five walks in game one and collected nine hits. All runs came by way of the an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The tournament hosts jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning with a pair of home runs. One was a solo shot, while the second was a two-run round-tripper.
Hunt hit a double to right center in the third and scored Calugay to help Drexel chip away at the lead. The Spartans extended their lead with a double to left center that scored three runs. At the end of the third, UNCG had a 6-1 lead.
In the fourth, Ashley Errico launched a home run to left field. But that run did not hold long as UNCG hit an RBI single in the fourth.
In the fifth, Annabelle Smink singled up the middle and scored Mia Garza to trim the deficit to four.
GAME TWO
Lindsay Nelson (1-4) tossed the 25th complete game of her career, striking out nine batters and holding Sacred Heard to seven hits and three runs.
Ameryn Humble went 2-for-3 and scored a run and an RBI. Madison Gayle entered the game as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning and hit a two-run home run to give Drexel its first win of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the second inning, Humble hit a single to right field and scored Errico to give the Dragons the lead. A batter later, Humble stole second. On the play, Smink stole home and pushed Drexel's lead to two.
In the fifth inning, Hunt hit a sacrifice fly to right field and scored Izzy Alamillo from third.
The Dragons entered the sixth inning with a 3-0 lead. The Pioneers hit a three-run home run to tie the game. But it did not hold for long. In the bottom of the sixth, Gayle launched a home run to center field to give Drexel the lead.

Drexel returns to UNCG for one final game on Sunday morning. The Dragons and Pioneers will face one more time at 10:30 a.m.
