PHILADELPHIA - Towson scored six fourth-quarter goals to take the lead and defeat Drexel, 16-11, in a Coastal Association contest on Saturday at Vidas Field. The Dragons held an 11-10 lead with nine minutes to go, but the Tigers scored four times in a span of 1:22 to pick up the road victory.
Zach Augustine scored a career-high four goals for the Dragons, who fell to 3-4. Towson (5-3) was led Josh Webber who had five goals and an assist.
Drexel opened up a 4-1 lead in the first quarter. Towson opened the scoring a minute in, but the Dragons rattled off four straight goals. Luke Carden started Drexel's run as he raced up the field and bounced a shot home in transition. Augustine had two goals in that span which sandwiched around a Gavin Kelly score. Webber stopped the run for Towson with back-to-back goals making it 4-3. Jack Joyner made it a two score game with the final goal of the quarter at the 4:22 mark. The game would remain tight with neither team leading by more than two goals until midway through the fourth quarter.
Webber matched his season total in goals with his third of the game early in the second on the man-up. Kelly countered with his second goal of the day to give Drexel a 6-4 advantage at the 10:29 mark of the second. That would be Drexel's last goal of the half as the Tiger defense stepped up and their offense scored the final four goals of the half to take the lead at 8-6.
In the third, with Towson ahead 9-7, Drexel was able to get the lead back. The Dragons Sean Curcio scored on an unassisted goal and then Augustine was at it again. He scored back-to-back goals, the second on a nice feed from Max Semple which sent him in alone in front of the cage. Towson tied the game for the fourth time, this time at 10-10 when Austin Ducommun beat Drew McGill. The quarter would end with that score. The Dragons appeared to have the momentum early in the fourth when Luke Tomak blistered a shot from more than 10 yards past the Towson keeper on the man-up. Tomak had another chance a few minutes later. The Dragons were in transition and Tomak was alone on the left side of the cage. Matt Nilan, who came in as an injury replacement in the cage for the Tigers, stoned Tomak. The Tigers raced the other way after the save and Nick DeMaio set up Alex Roussel to tie it. A minute later, DeMaio connected with Webber to give the Tigers the lead for good.
Augustine and Kelly combined for seven of Drexel's 11 goals. The Dragons were outshot, 43-29, and Towson won both the face-off battle (17-13) and ground balls (29-20). McGill had 12 saves but the Dragons couldn't overcome 17 turnovers.
In addition to Webber's five scores, Towson had three from Roussel. Chip Gallagher and Joaquin Villagomez each had two goals, while DeMaio added four assists and five points.
The Dragons head to the University of Virginia next weekend to face the fourth-ranked Cavaliers.
