CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia used a five-goal run first half run to take control of the game on its way to a 14-4 victory over Drexel on Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium Field. The Dragons saw their record fall to 3-5, while Virginia won its fifth in a row to improve to 8-1.
Payton Cormier scored the first two goals of the game for the hosts, but Drexel tied it midway through the opening quarter. Max Semple scored two goals in the span of just 1:02. Semple's first goal came on a rebound of a Drexel missed shot. His second goal came after a Virginia turnover. In transition, Conor Hooley found Semple right in front and he scored on the crease. That would be Drexel's last goal for a span of more than 12 minutes. Cormier scored the first and last goals of the 5-0 run to give the Cavaliers a five-goal cushion.
Virginia extended its lead later in the first half with three straight goals and headed into the locker room with an 11-4 lead. Payton Cormier had four first-half goals to lead the Cavaliers, while McCabe Millon handed out all three of his assists in the first half. Luke Tomak and Jack Joyner had Drexel's other two goals in the half. Drew McGill made 10 saves in the first half for the Dragons.
The third-ranked Cavaliers showed why they are one of the favorites to return to Philadelphia on Memorial Day weekend with an impressive performance on both ends of the field. They scored the only three goals of the third and held the Dragons scoreless for the entire second half. The Virginia defense forced 18 of Drexel's 23 turnovers.
McGill finished with 15 saves in three periods. Brendan Donnelly played the final 15 minutes in the cage and held UVA off the board. He made three stops. Cormier finished the day with six goals for Virginia. Griffin Schultz scored three times, while Connor Shellenberger added three points.
The Dragons return to conference play on Monday when they visit Hampton for the first time. Face-off is set for 3 p.m.
