PHILADELPHIA - Drexel Assistant Lacrosse Coach Tucker Durkin will be inducted into the Johns Hopkins University Athletic Hall of Fame on April 19. Durkin, who graduated from Hopkins in 2013, will be part of the 25th induction ceremony at the school.
Durkin was a four-year starter and a three-time All-American at the school. He earned second team honors as a sophomore and was a first team selection as a junior and senior (2012, 2013). Durkin was a back-to-back recipient of the William C. Schmeisser Award as the nation's top defenseman. He is the one of just four two-time Schmeisser Award recipients in Johns Hopkins history. Durkin started all 59 games he played in during his four years and finished with 127 career ground balls and a school-record 65 caused turnovers. The Blue Jays advanced to the NCAA Tournament three times and made the NCAA Quarterfinals in both 2011 and 2012.
The Huntingdon Valley native went on to a stellar career in professional lacrosse. He was drafted third overall in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Entry Draft. Durkin was an All-MLL defenseman as a rookie and was a three-time MLL All-Star as well as the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year. He moved to the Premier Lacrosse League in 2019 and was a three-time All-Star. Durkin retired from the professional game in March.
Durkin joined the Drexel coaching staff in the summer of 2019 and made an immediate impact as the defensive coordinator. In 2021, Drexel was second in the CAA and in the top 25 nationally in scoring defense. The Dragons allowed almost two less goals a game than a year ago and held more than half their opponents to 10 goals or less. The Dragons won the CAA championship for the first time since 2014 and and advanced to the NCAA Championships. Drexel held fourth-ranked Notre Dame to just 10 goals in the opening round of the tournament.
Durkin will be honored at induction ceremonies scheduled to take place at 6 pm in the Newton White Athletic Center on the Johns Hopkins campus. The class will also be honored at the Johns Hopkins-Maryland men's lacrosse game at Homewood Field on Saturday, April 20.
