Drexel Sweeps North Carolina A&T in a Doubleheader

PHILADELPHIA– The Drexel softball team swept North Carolina A&T in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Dragons scored three runs in the fourth inning of game one to defeat the Aggies, 7-2. In the second game, Drexel walked it off to take the second contest, 2-1. DU improves to 4-3 in conference action.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (4-7) tossed a gem as she held NC A&T to two runs in a complete game. The Old Bridge, N.J. native struck out eight batters.
Grace Abbonzio went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and scored two runs. The infielder went yard in the fifth inning to score Devyn Demchak. Ashley Errico and Lindsey Hunt added RBI's during the contest.
Drexel scored multiple runs in the first, fourth, and five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel scored the first two runs of the game in the opening inning. Errico earned a walk which advanced Izzy Alamillo who reached on a lead-off single, to give DU its first run. Lindsey Hunt's flyout to center scored Masone, who doubled to get on base.
In the fourth inning, Drexel added three more runs on the board. Annabelle Smink scored on an error by the Aggies to extend Drexel's lead. Kalea Calugay and Jackie Masone earned back-to-back walks and were able to come around to score.
North Carolina A&T scored their first run in the fifth inning on a Trinity Glover home run. Drexel answered back as Abbonzio hit a two-run homer. The final run of the game came on a double by Destiny Sims.
GAME TWO
Natalie Alldred (1-1) tossed a complete game to earn her first victory of the season. Alldred allowed three hits and one earned run in the effort.
Drexel and North Carolina A&T traded homeruns as the game was deadlocked at one all, headed into extras.
Demchak and Abbonzio led the Dragons with a pair of hits each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aggies earned the first tally of the game on a homerun by Joey Barkhimer in the fourth inning. Garza reached on an error by the third basemen and was able to reach scoring position. Drexel answered back as Demchak singled to score Garza.
In the bottom of the seventh, Smink lead off the inning on a double to left. She advanced to third following a fielder's choice that allowed Alamillo to join her on base. Masone flied out to center and Smink beat the throw home to score the game winning run.
UP NEXT
The Dragons close the series against NC A&T on Sunday from Vidas Athletic Complex. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
