Dragons Defeat N.C. A&T, 9-1; Sweep Aggies in Series

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team defeated the North Carolina A&T Aggies 9-1 on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Drexel clinched a three-game sweep of the Aggies.
Allison Hoppe (3-5) pitched five innings, allowing only two hits and one run. The freshman struck four batters out and only walked one.
Jackie Masone finished 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the first inning.
Grace Abbonizio went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and scored two runs herself.
Drexel scored two of its runs in the first inning. After Izzy Alamillo hit a triple to center field, Masone sent the ball over the left field wall to put Drexel ahead by two.
In the second inning, Abbonizio hit a single to center field and scored Lindsey Hunt on the play. After the lineup flipped, Alamillo singled through the right side and scored Abbonizio to put Drexel ahead by four. Alamillo did come around to score on a fielding error by the Aggies' shortstop.
In the third inning, N.C. A&T hit an RBI single up the middle to score its only run of the game. In the fifth inning, Drexel managed to load the bases with Abbonizio at the plate. The senior singled over the head of the centerfielder and cleared the bases. Drexel scored its ninth run a few batters later when Jackie Masone swung and missed on a pitch but beat out the catchers throw to first, Abbonizio scored the run.
Due to the mercy rule, the game ended in the fifth inning.
Drexel hosts the Lafayette Leopards in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26, at the Drexel Softball Field.
