Drexel Completes The Series Sweep of UMES

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel moved to 9-6 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday at Penn Park. The Dragons opened the day with a 9-1 victory in six innings before following with a 17-3 win in five innings.
How It Happened - Game One
Drexel broke through in the second inning. Kelsie Peters drew a leadoff walk and Devyn Demchak followed with a single to center. Annabelle Smink then brought home both runners on a play to right field, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Courtney Kols settled in early in the circle, striking out six and holding UMES scoreless through the first four innings.
The Hawks got on the board in the fifth on a solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Drexel answered in the bottom half with a five-run frame. Olivia Sciulli opened the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error. Later in the frame, Demchak hit a three-run homer, Smink doubled, and Macie Bergmann followed with an RBI single to push the Dragons ahead 7-1.
Drexel added two more in the sixth. Kalea Calugay worked a walk and Natalie Alldred followed with a two-run home run to deep center, ending the game early with the 9-1 final.
How It Happened - Game Two
Drexel stranded two in the first before breaking the game open in the second with five runs. Macie Bergmann doubled home the first run and later came around to score after a throwing error. Quinn Cunningham added an RBI single, Kylah Reading drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Kelsie Peters lifted a sacrifice fly, and Annabelle Smink drew an RBI walk to make it 5-0.
The Dragons put the game away in the third with 11 runs on nine hits. Reading hit a three-run homer to left center, Demchak added an RBI single, and Bergmann followed with a three-run homer to deep center. Later in the inning, Reading singled home another run and Calugay capped the outburst with a three-run homer to deep right, extending the lead to 16-0.
UMES answered with three runs in the fourth, but Drexel got one back in the bottom half when Ariana Castillo hit a solo home run to center for the 17-3 margin.
Natalie Alldred finished off the complete-game win in the fifth as the Dragons secured the sweep.
By the Numbers
Demchak went 4-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI across the doubleheader.
Reading finished 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored in Game Two.
Calugay went 4-for-8 on the day with a home run, a double, three RBI, and five runs scored.
Bergmann recorded four hits and five RBI across the two games, including a home run and double in the nightcap.
Alldred had two home runs on the day and drove in four runs.
Sciulli tripled in Game One and doubled in Game Two while scoring four runs in the doubleheader.
Kols tossed a complete game in the opener, allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts.
Alldred earned the complete-game win in Game Two, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Drexel totaled 26 runs on 25 hits in the two wins.
Up Next
Drexel hosts North Dakota on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. with the second game scheduled for 3 p.m.
