St. Simons Island, Ga. - The Drexel golf team finished in second place at the rain shortened Peoples Golf Championship. Teams were able to get a few holes in before bad weather, but due to the rain the tournament became 36 holes instead of 54.
Drue Nicholas continued his impressive season with his seventh straight round of par or better on Friday at the Peoples Golf Championship at Sea Palms Resort. Nicholas fired a 68 to lead the Dragons in the second round. Drexel had all four scorers shoot par or better on the afternoon as the Dragons fired a five-under par as a team, the second lowest score of any team on the day.
Nicholas had just one bogey all day and finished the back in 2-under par. He tied for fourth overall at 5-under par. Oscar Maxfield and Griffin Mitchell each shot 70. Mitchell got off to a great start and finished the front at 4-under par before coming back to the pack on the back nine. Both players finished at 2-over par.
Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa picked up the team's only eagle of the day. He did that on the par five, 484-yard fourth hole. Nyamukondiwa was in 12th place overall at one-under par. Caleb Taylor had a 72 on Friday, but was 2-under for the tournament and tied for ninth.
Drexel finished 13 shots behind Davidson. The Wildcats were the only other team besides the Dragons to shoot under par on Friday. Drexel was eight strokes better than Xavier and nine ahead of Wright State. Western Carolina and Belmont tied for fifth place. Wright State's Shane Ochs led the field at 9-under par. The Davidson duo of Joshua Stewart and Will Davis tied for second, just three shots better than Nicholas.
