HAMPTON, Va. – The Drexel softball team defeated the Hampton Pirates, 6-2 on Friday afternoon at the Lady Pirates Stadium in Hampton, Va.
Lindsay Nelson (7-9) went all seven innings, allowing seven hits and holding the Pirates to just two runs, one earned. In addition, the senior struck seven batters out.
The Dragons received three multi-hit games from Mia Garza, Lily Meuninck and Jackie Masone on Friday. For Meuninck and Masone, each hit a home run in the contest. Masone also added a double with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Hampton struck first in the bottom of the opening inning. After runners were moved into scoring position due to an error, a single was hit to right center and scored the game's first run.
Drexel tied the game in the third inning after Kalea Calugay hit a triple to left field and scored Grace Abbonizio. In the fourth, the Dragons took the lead and also added insurance runs. To tie the game, Meuninck crushed her third home run of the season. A batter later, Lindsey Hunt hit a double to right field, and then was brought home on another double by Masone. Drexel's double parade was not over, Izzy Alamillo hit a two-bagger to left field and scored Masone to push Drexel's lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, The Pirates hit another RBI single to pull within two of the Dragons, but that is all they could do in the fourth.
Drexel scored two unanswered goals in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, the Dragons received a solo shot from Jackie Masone, the fourth of the season. In the seventh, Drexel capped its scoring with a heads-up play on the basepaths. With Ashley Errico on first and Garza on third, Errico broke for second and intentionally got into a rundown. After a few throws, Garza took off for home and slid in safely to put Drexel ahead by four.
Drexel returns to the Lady Pirates Stadium on Saturday to play the second game of the three-game series against Hampton. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
