HAMPTON, Va. – A late-game rally fell short for the Drexel softball team as the Dragons were defeated by the Hampton Pirates, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon. DU scored five runs in the seventh inning to pull within one of the Pirates.

Allison Hoppe started the game in the circle and went 2.2 innings, though only one was charged to her line. In relief, Natalie Alldred finished the game pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and holding the Pirates to two runs.

Jackie Masone hit a three run home run in the seventh inning to begin the Drexel rally. Lily Meuninck added two more to the rally with a double to right field.

Hampton scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle. In the second, the Pirates added three more runs. A double to right center cleared the bases and put the home team ahead by four. In the third, another RBI to left field capped the scoring for Hampton.

In the top of the fifth, Abbonizio singled up the middle and scored Izzy Alamillo on the play. But the Pirates bounced back and scored a pair on a double to center field in the bottom of the inning.

Drexel mounted a rally in the top of the seventh with two outs. Alamillo and Annabelle Smink reached base safely and Masone crushed her fourth home run of the season to pull Drexel within three. It is the third straight game that Masone has hit a round-tripper. After the Dragons reached safely twice more, Meuninck hit a double to the left field fence and cleared the bases to pull the Dragons within one. But the rally ended there. Hampton struck out Ashley Errico to end the Drexel rally.

Drexel and Hampton return to the Lady Pirates Stadium on Sunday to play the rubber match. First pitch is slated for noon.
