Dragons Edged by Hampton in Extra Inning Battle, 7-6

HAMPTON, Va. – The Drexel softball team was defeated by the Hampton Pirates in extra innings, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon in Hampton, Va.
Lindsay Nelson (7-10) pitched 7.2 innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits. Only three runs were charged to her line. In addition, Nelson struck out seven batters.
Garza went 3-for-3 on the day, notching two RBIs, one of which gave Drexel the lead in the eighth inning.
Hampton began the scoring in the bottom of the first after hitting an RBI single to right center. But Drexel did not stay down for long. The Dragons scored two runs in the third inning to take the lead. A Masone double to right field scored Annabelle Smink. A sacrifice fly by Mia Garza rounded out the scoring in the inning as Masone scored on the play.
Drexel scored another run on a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the fifth. Masone scored once more to push Drexel's lead to two.
In the bottom of the sixth, Hampton took advantage of an error to score three runs and take an advantage. One run scored on an error, then two more scored on a single to left field.
Drexel went into the top of the seventh down by one run. To lead off the inning, Garza drew a walk. Holly Spletzer entered the game a pinch runner and took second on a wild pitch. With one out, Calugay hit a gapper to left center and tied the game at four with an RBI double. Hampton escaped the inning only, conceding the tying run.
Nelson retired the Pirates in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Dragons were quick to produce at the top of the eighth, and Abbonizio started a rally with a single to right center. Abbonizio then slid safely into second on a fielder's choice that was thrown away by the shortstop. With runners on first and second, Masone drew a walk to load the bases for Garza. The junior hit a soft liner up the middle and beat out the infield hit. In the process, the ball was thrown wide of first base and two runs came in to score. A batter later, Meuninck drew a walk to load the bases up once more for Calugay. But two runs is all Drexel could score, as Hampton produced two more outs to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the eighth, Hampton was able to load the bases and threatened to score with just one out. Nelson was able to produce a groundball for Errico to get the force out at home. With two outs, Hampton hit a two-run single to left field to tie the game. A batter later, Hampton skied a ball in the infield that was able to drop and score the game-winning run.
Drexel returns to Philadelphia to play a single game against University City foe, Penn. First pitch from Penn Park is slated for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17.
