PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team was defeated by the Penn Quakers, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Penn Park.
Natalie Alldred (2-4) started in the circle for Drexel and tossed three innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Allison Hoppe entered the game in relief and pitched three innings as well, only allowing one run on one hit.
Lily Meuninck hit a pair of singles in a 2-for-3 day. With the first single of the day, Meuninck drove home Kalea Calugay, who hit a double to deep center field in the fourth inning.
Penn scored three on back-to-back home runs, along with a blooper that fell in the gap between right field and first base.
The Quakers scored an insurance run in the third inning on a single to right field. But the Dragons used a double by Calugay and a single by Meuninck to trim the deficit back to three.
In the fifth inning, Penn scored on a single to right field to push its lead back to four. But, again, the Dragons scored once more to pull within three once more. With Abbonizio on third and Calugay on first, The two intentionally began a rundown. While the Quakers were occupied with Calugay, Abbonizio took home and scored Drexel's second run of the game.
Drexel is set to travel to Long Island to begin a three-game series against the Stony Brook Seawolves on Friday, April 19. The game on Friday is set to begin at 3 p.m.
