HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Luke Tomak scored five times as Drexel held off Hofstra, 13-12, on Saturday afternoon in Hempstead. The Dragons kept their CAA playoffs alive by defeating the Pride for the eighth straight time on the road. Jack Joyner broke a 12-12 tie with his second goal of the game with 7:34 to play and the Dragons held the Pride scoreless the rest of the day.
The Dragons (5-7, 2-3 CAA) jumped out to a quick early lead by scoring six of the first seven goals. Six different players scored the first six goals and when Max Semple scored with 1:07 to go in the first, the Dragons led 6-1. Hofstra scored a late goal as the Dragons took a four-goal lead to the second quarter. The Pride started chipping away and cut the lead to three at halftime.
The Dragons held the lead throughout the third, in large part to Tomak. The junior scored four of his five goals in the stanza, his final one with just under three remaining in the third, as the Dragons seemed to have a comfortable four-goal lead. The Pride would not go away. They scored late in the third and then opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals, the last by Justin Sykes to tie the game and send the Shuart Stadium crowd into an uproar. Just over two minutes later, Joyner would score an unassisted goal, giving Drexel the lead. That proved to be the last goal of the game as Drexel escaped Long Island with a much-need victory.
Tomak's five goals were a career-high. Freshman Gavin Kelly handed out four assists and finished with five points. Joyner had an assist to go along with his two scores, while Max Semple also scored twice and moved into Drexel's top 20 in career goals. Drew McGill made five saves in between the pipes for the Dragons.
John Madsen had four goals and an assist to lead Hofstra (4-8, 1-4). Each team had 38 shots and Hofstra won the face-off battle, 16-13.
Drexel will host Delaware next Saturday on Senior Day at Vidas Field.
