STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook scored four straight goals in the second quarter to take the lead for good as the Seawolves defeated Drexel, 13-8, on Saturday afternoon on Long Island. Max Semple scored four times for the Dragons, but it wasn't enough as Drexel fell to 1-3 in CAA play and 4-7 overall. Stony Brook improved to 4-7 and 2-2 in the CAA.
The game was tight most of the way, but Drexel never led in the game. Semple scored Drexel's first two goals, the second which evened the score at 2-2 early in the second period. The Seawolves then scored four times in a span of just under eight minutes to make it 6-2. The Dragons stopped some of the momentum by scoring twice in the final 1:04 of the half. Gavin Kelly and Jack Joyner scored just 22 seconds apart as the teams went to break with Drexel down 6-4.
In the third, Semple and Luke Tomak sandwiched scores around a Stony Brook goal to make it a one-goal game. Just as it seemed the Dragons would even the score the Seawolves answered. Jack Dougherty and Dylan Pallonetti combined for eight second half scores as Stony Brook earned a key CAA win. Pallonetti finished the day with five goals and added an assist. Dougherty scored four times.
Joyner finished the afternoon with a pair of goals and an assist. Conor Hooley handed out two assists in a losing cause. Drew McGill came up with eight stops in the cage. Tommy Wilk picked up the win for Stony Brook with 13 saves. Nick DuPuis had five assists to go along with a goal. Drexel outshot Stony Brook by one and scored on two of its four man-up opportunities.
Drexel returns to Long Island next weekend to face Hofstra on Saturday.
