STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell short to No. 1 seed Stony Brook in the CAA Championship Saturday afternoon, 9-6. Jenika Cuocco finished with 17 saves, one shy of a career-high. Kate Marano finished with two goals and two assists. The Dragons defense held SBU to under ten goals for only the second time this season.
Cuocco, Corinne Bednarik and Camryn Ryan were selected to the 2024 CAA Women's Lacrosse All-Tournament Team.
BY THE NUMBERS
The Dragons had a defensive battle in the opening quarter. Jenika Cuocco collected six saves in just the first frame. The sophomore came in clutch with multiple big stops, including a behind the back shot from Kailyn Hart that Cuocco was able to stop at the last moment. Drexel scored the lone point of the quarter, after Kate Marano fought off the defense to reach the back of the net.
Marano kicked off the second quarter for DU, charging down field to hit the left of the net for her second tally. The Seawolves responded at the 8:12 mark, as Clare Levy raced by the Dragon defense to get SBU on the board, 2-1.
Corinne Bednarik got Drexel back on track, scoring just in front of the crease off the tight pass from Marano. Ellie Masera was able to take advantage of a DU penalty, successfully converting a free-position shot into a goal. The Dragons went into the half up 3-2.
The Dragons started off fast in the second frame. After a Seawolves penalty, Allison Drake took advantage of the player-up and scored off the dish from Bea Buckley. Stony Brook quickly answered with a goal of their own, thanks to Kailyn Hart's first of the day. DU got back on the board just a 1:30 later to score. Bridget Finley fired through the bottom of the net from to the over the net pass from Marano, her fourth point of the game to make it 5-3.
The Seawolves went on the run after the goal from Finely. SBU scored three straight to end the quarter up 6-5. Masera, Hart and Charlotte Verhulst all scored.
Stony Brook kept the streak going into the fourth, with goals from Marera, Erin MacQuarrie and Morgan Mitchell. Allison Drake was able to stop the Seawolves streak, scoring off a free-position shot to cut the lead to 9-6. This was ultimately not enough as the Dragons fell in the CAA Championship.
