Turner and Reed Lead the Way as Drexel Beats Widener, 93-59

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel Dragons started its 2025-26 season Monday night with a convincing 93-59 win over the Widener Pride at home in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Graduate student Garfield Turner set a new career high with 14 points and also tallied four rebounds, a steal and a block. Josh Reed also set a career record in scoring with 17 points. Reed finished with a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds.
Drexel was in control from the opening tip, building a 23-4 lead over the Pride in the first seven minutes. Shane Blakeney had nine points and six rebounds and senior Eli Beard made his Drexel debut with six points and four assists. Senior Victor Panov had six points and nine rebounds, as well as four assists and three steals. Kevon Vanderhorst led the team with six assists to go with his nine points, seven rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
The Dragons had contributions from everyone on opening night, with 49 points off the bench. New Dragon Dillon Tingler had 10 points and three steals. Sophomore Ralph Akuta was four of five from the field and blocked six shots. Senior Max Davis had five points, an assist and a rebound in seven minutes off the bench. Martin de LaPorterie scored six points and had six rebounds.
As a team Drexel had 25 second chance points, 24 fast break points, and 60 points in the paint. They outrebounded Widener 50-33 and had 28 assists.
The Dragons are back at it on Saturday when they travel to Hawk Hill to take on Saint Joseph's in the first of three Big 5 matchups this season.
