ALBANY, N.Y. – UAlbany broke open a tie game with six goals in the third quarter and defeated Drexel, 16-9, on Saturday. Each team is now 1-1 on the season. Max Semple scored three goals to lead Drexel.
UAlbany's Will Hardy scored on a man-up goal just 21 seconds into the third quarter to give the Great Danes the lead for good. Two minutes later Daniel Kesselring made it an 8-6 game. UAlbany would add two more before Conor Hooley found Max Semple at the 4:06 mark of the third, cutting the lead to 10-7. UAlbany would then go on another run, scoring four straight and holding Drexel without a goal for a span of more than 12 minutes. Alec Tulio and Tristan Plotts each scored late goals for the Dragons.
The first half was played fairly even as Drexel used a second quarter rally to tie the game before intermission. The Great Danes led 6-3 with 11 minutes to go in the half, but Drexel's defense held UAlbany off the board the rest of the quarter. On the other end, Drexel scored three times over the last 11 minutes with Max Semple, Matt Martin and Alec Tulio finding the back of the net.
With his three goals, Semple now has 92 career goals at Drexel. He moved into a tie with Craig Caputo for 13th on the Dragons' career list. Tulio finished with two goals, while Witt Crawford, Conor Hooley, Gavin Kelly, Jack Porter and Owen Knight each had two points.
The Great Danes outshot Drexel, 48-33 and snared 42 ground balls on the day. Silas Richmond led UAlbany with five goals and six points, while Kesselring added three goals and two assists.
The Dragons have a short turnaround with another midweek game this week. Drexel will travel to Northern New Jersey to face NJIT on Wednesday night.
