
Dragons Fall on Opening Day of Liberty Invitational

GAME ONE
Violet Marta (0-5) started in the circle for the Dragons in game one against Georgetown. Marta went 1.1 innings before being relieved by Natalie Alldred, who went two innings. Madison Taylor completed the game by pitching 2.2 innings.
Drexel's bats were hot in game one. Izzy Alamillo and Mia Garza led the Dragons in the hit column. Alamillo with 3-for-5 with one run, while Garza turned in a 3-for-4 performance with a home run and two runs scored.
Kylah Reading and Annabelle Smink each reached base twice. Smink finished with two RBIs and Reading had one.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel jumped out to a early one-run lead in the first inning after Lily Meuninck hit a double to center and scored Alamillo. However, the Hoyas scored seven unanswered runs in the first three innings.
In the fourth inning, Drexel trimmed into the lead. Garza hit a home run to center field to pull Drexel within five. Later, in the inning, Smink hit a double to left field that scored Alldred and trimmed the lead to four. To cap off Drexel's inning, Lana Mooney hit a double down the left field line that plated three runs and lowered the deficit to just one run, 7-6.
The Hoyas' offense did not quiet down either, Georgetown turned in a seven-run inning in the fourth to push its score to 14.
Drexel answered in the fifth inning, scoring five runs. With Garza on base, Reading hit a single up the middle and then took second base on the throw home. Two batters later, Kelsie Peters doubled down the left field line and scored Reading from second. The next batter, Smink, helped Drexel score another run after hitting another double to right center. At the end of the inning, Drexel trailed 14-9.
Georgetown scored an insurance run in the sixth to push its total to 15.
GAME TWO
Madison Taylor (0-6) opened game two and pitched 5.2 innings. Violet Marta entered the game to complete the sixth inning, which she did after allowing just one hit.
Three Dragons each picked up two hits in the second game. Meuninck finished 2-for-4 with two runs, while Garza and Kalea Calugay each went 2-for-4 with one run. Garza added an RBI to her stat sheet.
Drexel left 11 runners on base, including a bases loaded situation in the top of the third with no outs. Liberty, in turn, stranded six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Flames opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning, Drexel managed to tie it to the bottom portion of the frame. Krizan walked with the bases loaded to score Drexel's first run. Alamillo then singled to right field to tie the game at two.
In the bottom of the inning, Liberty hit a solo home run to take back the lead, but its lead did not hold for long. Drexel loaded the bases in the third and walked in another run to tie the game once more. Liberty scored three runs in the bottom of the third to double its score and lead by three.
In the fourth inning, Garza hit a double to right center and scored Meuninck to score Drexel's fourth run of the game. However, Liberty added four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to lead Drexel, 10-4.
UP NEXT
Drexel returns to Liberty on Saturday to compete on day two of the Liberty Invitational. Drexel is set to play Georgetown at 10 a.m. and Appalachian State at 2 p.m.
