Dragons Upended by Monmouth, 5-4

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel softball team was upended by the Monmouth Hawks on Friday afternoon, 5-4, in West Long Branch, N.J.
Violet Marta pitched six innings in the effort, striking out three batters.
The Dragons received two hits from Lily Meuninck and Lana Mooney in game one of the three-game series. Mooney had a pair of singles, while Meuninck finished with a double, home run and three RBI's.
Monmouth was the team to strike first, scoring twice in the first inning. The Hawks added an insurance run in the second inning, and two more runs in the fourth.
In the top of the sixth, Drexel put a dent in the deficit. Meuninck hit a home run to center field and scored two runs on the play. At the end of the inning, Drexel trailed by three.
In the seventh, Meuninck reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Kalea Calugay grounded out to the pitcher and scored Kylah Reading on the play. Drexel's offense was stopped just one run shy of tying the game.
The Dragons return to West Long Branch, N.J. at noon on Saturday afternoon for the second game of the series.
