Dragons Slighted by Monmouth, 5-4

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel softball team was slighted by the Monmouth Hawks in West Long Branch on Saturday afternoon, 5-4. The Hawks used a two-out rally in the seventh to overcome the Dragons, who had tied the game in the sixth inning.
Madison Taylor started in the circle for the Dragons and struck six batters out in the effort.
Izzy Alamillo finished 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Mia Garza checked in with a hit as well, hitting a double in the sixth inning.
Drexel struck first in the second inning of the game. Calugay hit a two-run home run to left field and scored Mia Garza to give the Dragons its first lead of the season.
In the bottom of the second, the Hawks answered with a run off a single. A bobble in centerfield allowed the runner to score. Taylor managed to get out of the inning with just one run scoring.
Drexel scored an insurance run in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Kylah Reading. Izzy Alamillo scored on the play to push the lead to 3-1 in Drexel's favor.
The home team responded in the third inning after scoring two runs on an throwing error. After finishing the inning tied at three, Monmouth hit an infield single to take the lead.
The Dragons hit a double in the top of the sixth to tie the game at four. Garza laced a double to center field and Lana Mooney scored on the play.
Monmouth scored a run in the seventh inning to defeat the Dragons, 7-6. After surrendering a single to lead off the inning, Drexel struck out the next two batters. A pair of singles after the strikeouts scored the winning run.
The Dragons return to West Long Branch, N.J. on Sunday to play the series finale against the Hawks. First pitch is slated for noon.
