Six Dragons Score Six Points
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's lacrosse team (6-2) collected their fifth straight win as the Dragons rolled over William & Mary Friday afternoon, 21-11. This was a season best in goals, with DU out shooting the Tribe 40-21. Anna Maria Gragnani picked up the single-game program record for draw controls with 15, while adding six goals. Allison Drake also hit the back of the net six times in the Dragons CAA opener.
The Tribe were able to strike first. Ainsley Huizenga ran across the middle of the field, dodging the Drexel defender to collect the goal. This would be the only time William & Mary would have control of the lead. Drake caught fire, tallied three consecutive times in just two minutes. Piper Kienzie scored to cut the lead down to just one. Kienzie's shot bounced just in front of the Drexel keeper to hit the top net. Each team traded a goal before Drexel went on a 8-0 run. Grganani scored a pair while Drake added another to extend the lead to 7-3.
Ellie Wall got on the board for Drexel at the 11:52 mark of the second quarter. Gragnani added two more, while Drake and Bridget Finley also fired in goals. The Dragons kept the Tribe scoreless for nearly a full quarter before the Tribe rattled off a pair of goals. Finely and Bea Buckley each tallied for Drexel to close the half. Buckley had a career-high six points, recording two goals and adding four assists.
Drexel started the third for two goals before W&M started to march back into the game. The Tribe rallied off four straight goals, with Paige Gilbert contributing for a pair.
Gragnani gave the Dragons back momentum as she scored two straight in the opening minutes of the fourth. William & Mary responded with two goals of their own. The Dragons finished the game with three straight, as Wall, Kate Quinn and Drake all got home.
The Dragons hit the road to take on Delaware for the last time as conference rivals on Friday, March 21. Opening draw is set for 6 p.m.
