MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Violet Marta pitched the best game of her career, going six innings and holding the Charleston Cougars to just one run on three hits in Drexel's 1-0 loss to the Cougars.
In the first game of the series, it was a pitchers dual. While Marta held the Cougars hitters in check, the Drexel offense was also held in check, only picking up one hit in the seventh. However, the Dragons did put pressure on Charleston, drawing three walks.
Mia Garza singled through the left side to break up Charleston's bid for a no hitter. The Cougars scored their lone run in the fourth inning, scoring on an errant throw to third on a stolen base attempt.
The Dragons return to Mount Pleasant, S.C. on Saturday at 2 p.m. to play the second game of the three-game series.
