WASHINGTON, D.C. - Drexel raced out to a big first half lead and defeated Elon, 91-74, in the second round of the CAA Championship at CareFirst Arena. Jason Drake scored 25 points, Kobe MaGee added 24 and Cole Hargrove recorded a double-double as Drexel advanced to face top-seeded Towson on Sunday.
The Dragons held Elon to just 29 percent in the first half and used an early 8-0 run to break a 13-13 tie. MaGee had a first half to remember. The junior had 19 first half points and drained four 3-pointers. Drexel continued to apply the pressure and closed the first half with a 14-0 run. The half ended when Jason Drake's long 3-pointer from beyond NBA range found nothing but net at the buzzer. That gave Drexel a commanding 45-22 lead.
The lead swelled to as many as 25, but Elon would not go away. They started out the second half on fire from the floor and when TK Simpkins sank a trey with 9:13 left, the Phoenix trailed by just five points at 59-54. That would be as close as Elon would get as Drexel handled the press which led to some open 3-pointers. Shane Blakeney and Yame Butler hit back-to-back 3-pointers to increase the lead to 16 and Drexel's lead would remain in double figures the rest of the day.
Drake tied his career-high with 25 points. He was 6-for-8 from the line and handed out four assists. MaGee had five 3-pointers, grabbed eight boards and had four assists. Hargrove added 19 points and had 10 rebounds. The junior was 8-for-11 from the floor and had a pair of blocks.
The Dragons' 91 points were the most the team has ever scored in their 24-year CAA Tournament history. Their 12 3-pointers also set a team tournament record, previously set against Charleston during the 2021 run to the school's only CAA Championship. Drexel finished the night 12-for-25 from deep and shot 51 percent from the floor.
TK Simpkins and Sam Sherry each had 23 points to lead Elon. The Phoenix shots 64 percent in the second half as they tried to comeback, but committed six second half turnovers that led to eight Drexel points.
Towson and Drexel will tip off at 12 p.m. on Sunday. The Tigers beat Drexel in both regular season meetings. The first game went to double overtime and the second game the Dragons appeared to win, but Victor Panov's tip-on at the buzzer was overturned after review. The winner will play in the CAA Semifinals on Monday night.
