Dragons Split Doubleheader Against Elon

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader against the Elon Phoenix on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix took game one, 11-4. The Dragons returned in the second game and defeated the visitors, 6-3.
Madison Taylor started the first game and pitched five innings. Sidney Toukonen entered the game in relief and pitched two innings, allowing three runs on just two hits.
Kalea Calugay became just the eighth different Dragon to hit a pair of home runs in one single game. The junior hit the first home run of the day in the second inning. The solo home run put Drexel on the board. In the fourth inning, Calugay struck once more with a two-run home run.
Elon took the lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. In the second inning, the Phoenix added a run and then added two more in the third. After Drexel scored two in the fifth, Elon responded with one run in the top of the fifth.
Elon pulled away from Drexel in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to push its lead to seven.
In the second game of the day, Violet Marta started in the circle for Drexel. The freshman went four innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Madison Taylor entered the game in the fifth inning and shut the Phoenix out, pitching three innings and holding them to just three hits.
Kylah Reading went 2-for-3 with a grand slam and five RBIs. The home run was the first of Reading's career and also the hit that put Drexel ahead of Elon.
Elon opened the game with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 in favor of Elon until the bottom of the third inning. Reading hit a single down the left field line to tie the game at one.
In the top of the fourth, Elon hit a two-run home run to take a two-run lead over the Dragons. The two-run lead did not hold for long. In the bottom of the fourth, Calugay hit her third home run of the day to bring Drexel within one.
In the bottom of the fifth, Reading hit her grand slam to give Drexel the three-run lead and put them in position to win the series finale.
Drexel returns to action with a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 15 against the Seton Hall Pirates. First pitch from the Drexel Softball Field is slated for 2 p.m.
