Dragons Clinch a Berth in CAA Championship With Monmouth's Win vs. Delaware
PHILADELPHIA - Conor Hooley rifled a shot from the left wing with 3:11 to play to give Drexel a 15-14 win against Stony Brook on Senior Day at Vidas Field. The Dragons trailed by with less than seven minutes to play but came from behind to move to 4-2 in the CAA. With the victory, combined with Monmouth's win against Delaware, the Dragons clinched a spot in the upcoming CAA Championship.
Stony Brook (6-7, 2-4) scored three straight times in the fourth quarter to turn a two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead at 14-13. The Dragons answered when Jack Joyner dodged through traffic on the left wing and evened the game up. It was Joyner's third goal of the afternoon and the second hat trick of his career. Less than two minutes later, Joyner, who was dodging down the right side, fired a long pass to the left wing, where Hooley was waiting. The junior deposited a shot in the lower right corner as Drexel took the 15-14 lead.
The Dragons would hold on as they improved to 7-6 overall. The seven wins and four CAA wins both eclipsed last year's win totals.
The Dragons trailed by three goals twice in the first half before battling back in an entertaining game in West Philadelphia. The game was tied on seven occasions. The Dragons led 2-1 late in the first before the Seawolves scored four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead. With the score tied at two, the game became extremely physical as both teams gave and received a number of hard hits in the midfield. After one exchange, Drexel was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct foul which was unreleasable. The Seawolves took advantage of that, scoring twice to take the lead. They added two more man-up goals in the first half and ended the game 5-for-6 with the extra man. Despite that, the Dragons Liam Kammar and Joyner had goals late in the half to get Drexel back in the game as Stony Brook went to intermission ahead 8-6.
In the fourth quarter, the Dragons scored three of the first four goals to even the game at 9-9. Witt Crawford had two of those, while Owen Knight had the other. Justin Bonacci, who had five goals in the game, put Stony Brook ahead by a goal at the 7:46 mark of the third. Drexel answered and got the momentum back on an oustanding play three minutes later. With the shot clock waning, Hooley lofted a pass from behind the net to defenseman Pat Lyman, who came streaking in from midfield. Lyman caught it and beat the shot clock with a score tying it at 10-10. Alec Tulio then gave the Dragons the lead on an underhanded scoop shot off a rebound. That lead lasted briefly, as once again Bonacci found the net. This time, he scored after an errant long outlet pass that he picked up. He just beat the third quarter buzzer as the game headed to the final 15 even at 11-11.
Hooley finished the day with two goals and three assists. Joyner and Crawford each had three goals and an assist. Knight and Semple also scored twice for DU. Trent Layton won 7 of his 11 face-off attempts. Drexel outshot the visitors, 44-38, and had four more ground balls than Stony Brook. Brendan Donnelly made eight saves for the Dragons.
Caleb Young had three goals, while Kian McCoy scored twice and had three assists for Stony Brook.
The Dragons end the regular season on Friday night at Delaware. It will be the last meeting between the two long-time rivals as members of the CAA.
