Dragons Upended in Doubleheader Against Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Drexel softball team was defeated by the Campbell Camels in both games of a double header on Saturday afternoon. The Camels were victorious in the first game, 7-3. In the latter game, Campbell defeated the Dragons, 8-2.
In game one, Violet Marta went six innings and struck out a batter in the effort.
Drexel notched four hits in the first game of the day. Devyn Demchak led the Dragons, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kylah Reading, Lily Meuninck and Macie Bergmann all joined Demchak in the hit column. Izzy Alamillo drew two walks and scored a run for Drexel.
In the first inning of the game, Demchak cracked a double to left field and scored Reading on the play to take an early 1-0 lead. The Camels bounced back in the second inning, scoring two runs in the inning.
The Camels added three runs in the third inning to push their lead to 5-1. In the sixth inning, Drexel had runners on the corners. With Reading on first and Alamillo on third, Reading got herself into a rundown allowing Alamillo to score on the play.
Campbell scored two runs in the sixth to push their lead to five heading into the seventh inning. With Ariana Castillo and Zoe Krizan on first in and third, Castillo stole second, drawing an errant throw and scoring Krizan. However the one run was all Drexel could score against Campbell, ending the game 7-3.
In game two, Sidney Toukonen pitched 3.1 innings, striking out a pair of batters. Marta entered the game in relief and went 2.2 innings, holding the Camels to just one hit.
The Dragons picked up five hits in the second game. Alamillo went 1-for-3 with an RBI triple. Kelsie Peters also picked up an RBI single during the game.
Drexel struck first once again in the first inning. Kelsie Peters hit a single up the middle to score Kalea Calugay and give Drexel its 1-0 lead. The Camels then scored two runs in the second inning and three runs in each the third and fourth innings to take a seven-run lead.
In the fifth inning, Ariana Castillo drew a two-out walk to reach first. She then went first-to-home on a triple by Izzy Alamillo down the right field line.
Drexel travels to Easton, Pa. on Wednesday, April 23 to play the Lafayette Leopards in a pair of games. The first game is slated for 2 p.m.
